Watercolour demonstrations

Watercolour painting techniques are always easiest to learn when you can actually see the whole process live in front of you. With my watercolour demonstrations I will show you every step of producing a lively, atmospheric landscape painting.

We’ll start by looking at the principals of how to design a successful composition, working either from sketches or photographs. Then I’ll draw the elements of the scene, maybe using a charcoal sketch to show both line and tone. Once the design is complete, it’s time to get painting!

I like to demonstrate both wet into wet and dry brush techniques, so the painting will usually start with plenty of water on the paper. Once the initial stage is complete then it needs to dry – this is usually a good time for a tea or coffee break. Following on from that, I’ll build up the remainder of the painting working mainly on to dry paper, showing the different brush strokes and colour mixes.

I use a very limited palette of colours in any one painting, which gives the work atmosphere and harmony. Quite often I will use only two tubes of paint, it’s quite amazing what a wide variety of tones and hues can be obtained.

I can tailor my demonstration to suit your particular requirements. If, for example, you would like the subject to be a coastal scene then just let me know when you book. The average length of a demonstration is around two hours, but it can be shorter or longer to fit in with your own timetable. Of course I’ll be happy to answer any questions, either during the painting or at the end.
