Watercolour workshops If you’ve never tried watercolour as a medium, or are already using it but feel you could learn more, then read on. My workshops are designed for artists of any ability, from beginner to the more experienced painter. The workshop format can be varied to suit your individual needs, but a typical day will start with a look at brushes, paints and paper and some experiments with mixing washes and creating colours. We’ll then move on to discuss the elements of a successful painting – composition, drawing, use of tone – the essential building blocks before you start to actually paint. This will lead us into creating a simple but effective watercolour, using a limited palette of colours. I’ll show you how by using just a few tubes of paint you can have harmony and atmosphere in your work, whilst at the same time making colour mixing easier. Needless to say we’ll be mixing greens, those most notorious bane of the watercolour painter’s life! Depending on the pace of our watercolour, there then may be an opportunity for those in the group to work on a subject of their own choice, or alternatively, we can paint a different scene step by step together. I find that the timing of the workshop can vary considerably depending on the requirements of those taking part. I never rush to finish a particular stage by a certain time, it’s important that we work at a pace that everyone feels comfortable with. Workshops particularly for beginners Whilst I find that beginners cope well with my normal workshop format, if the group is composed solely of those just starting out as artists, I have a slightly different arrangement which allows us to spend more time on the basics. Even so, everyone will go home with at least one completed watercolour. My approach is completely flexible depending on your own requirements.
